MADISON

There was a light tap at my bedroom door. I woke up, but since it took my brain a few seconds to catch up with the events of the previous evening and drag them into the present, I didn’t panic until my dad opened my bedroom door and stuck his head in.

It wasn’t usually a big deal. Sometimes when he was leaving before me, he’d let me know. I never minded before, especially since I normally didn’t sleep in anything but leggings and giant T-shirts anyway.

But it was the arm across my chest and the leg thrown over my thighs as much as my dad’s expression that reminded me this wasn’t a normal morning.

“Ah...dad...” I stuttered.

Thankfully, I wasn’t naked. Sometime in the middle of the night I’d crawled into Luka’s shirt then back into his arms, burrowing in the nest he’d made us out of pillows and blankets. We didn’t have to deal with that embarrassing situation.

Luka stiffened, lifting his head a moment after he heard my voice, a soft growl escaping his lips before he cut it off.

My dad stood in the threshold, the door fully opened as he stared down at us with an expression so stony he might has well have been frozen by Medusa. I’d never seen him this mad, not at me anyway.

“Get out,” Dad said to Luka, voice cold and strangled as if he was talking through being choked to death.

“Coach,” Luka began, but he didn’t get another word in.

“I set up a very clear boundary,” my dad said, cutting him off. “I told you all that my daughter was off limits. I forbade you to touch her. And you went behind my back? Get out of my house, and we’ll just have to see about getting you off my team. Consider your spot at this university in jeopardy.”

Luka sat up, but kept his arms wrapped around me. “I know you’re angry, but it isn’t what you think. I’m not here to disrespect you. This isn’t just some fling to me.” His voice was even but not cold. “Madison is my fated mate. I’m not going to let you come between us, but I’m hoping we can sit down and discuss it so we’re all on the same page.”

“You can’t use that excuse. She’s human, there’s no such thing. You should know—” Dad cut himself off, thinning his lips. After a long moment, he continued. “You need to leave now. I’m not going to tell you again.”

Anxiety churned in my stomach as my mate and my dad glared at each other. I felt Luka’s tension all through his body, heard the struggle in his voice to remain respectful and not escalate the argument into a fight.

The last thing I wanted was a fight. But my dad wasn’t going to back down either.

I took a deep breath. First things first. This was my dad’s house. He had a right to decide who could be inside.

“Luka,” I said quietly. “I think you should go.”

His arms tightened for a minute, then he exhaled and loosened his grip, rising smoothly to his feet.
